Preserving Blighted Housing

La Hacienda Belen, NM

Pavilion Construction Press Release 03.21.2011 – For immediate release

On January 10th 2011, Pavilion Construction started the revitalization activity on the La Hacienda Apartments in Belen, NM. La Hacienda was secured by Pavilion after a competitive bid process. The project is being developed by YES Housing Inc and financed by the state Mortgage Finance Authority. This project will transform blighted unites to quality homes, but also assist in the stabilizing efforts of the historic Belen Community.

For the mayor and the people of Belen, the La Hacienda commencement event served as a crucial turning point for the community. The goal of the project is to provide affordable living in a neighborhood distressed with poverty and crime. “There is a need for housing”, says Rob Olson, Vice President of Pavilion Construction.

La Hacienda apartments are located in an area rich with history. The apartments are situated among many other historic homes in the oldest parts of Belen. Unfortunately, these historic houses have also been serving as the primary source of criminal and drug related activity in the neighborhood and surrounding areas. Belen Mayor Rudy Jaramillo reported to KRQE News 13, "I believe that our police department would come down here ten times if not more a day.”

With the renovation of the La Hacienda Apartments, YES Housing is hoping to promote a positive change in the community, while still maintaining its historic roots. The apartment’s interior will be completely renovated, while the historic exterior brick façade will be preserved. The project will also include “green”/sustainable features, incorporating water conserving fixtures and energy star appliances.

La Hacienda Facts:

The project is totaled at 17,831 heated sq ft. It is a complete renovation of one building, twenty-two units. Renovation will include: roof replacement, demo of courtyard, new play structure, bbq pits and picnic tables; new plumbing, electrical, appliances, cabinets, counters, floor coverings, as well as wall and ceiling insulation.
