On Friday April 20th, 2012 the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso celebrated the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the 73-unit, LEED Platinun Paisano Green Community. Assistant Secretary Sandra Henriquez of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Congressman Sivestre Reyes , Mayor John Cook, among many other state and local elected leadership, including future Paisano Green Community residents were in attendance. Immediatly following the
ceremony, guests were invited to tour the units, greet future residents, and even allowed the opportunity to sign a pair of the wind turbine blades and solar panels that are to be installed on site.
Setting the stage for what future public housing is sure to be, the Paisano Green Community is truly innovative. Situated on a site which had previously been vacant for over 10 years, the community adds new life and sustainability to the neighborhood. In close proximity to a shopping center, park, zoo, and bus shelter the community’s senior residents benefit ease of access to public transportation and various recreational activities in the area.
As the first Net-Zero, LEED Platinum public housing community in the nation, Paisano features wind turbines, rooftop solar panels, air-source heat-pump water heaters, EnergyStar appliances, drought tolerant landscape, including strategically placed north and south facing windows and canopies for increased protection from excessive glare and solar heat gain.
